Description
- Mpox (Monkeypox) is a viral zoonotic disease that occurs primarily in Central and West Africa. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae. It is similar to smallpox but generally less severe.
Transmission
- Transmission occurs through contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission through respiratory droplets, bodily fluids, and contaminated materials. It can also be transmitted via close contact with respiratory secretions.
Symptoms
- Initial symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion. This is followed by a rash that forms blisters and scabs over time. Symptoms generally last 2-4 weeks.

- Smallpox vaccine provides protection
Treatment
- There is no specific treatment for monkeypox, but supportive care and antiviral treatments like Tecovirimat may be used in severe cases.
